Suvrajeet Sen and Julie Higle Recognized by INFORMS Journal for Test-of-Time Impact

November 29, 2022

Professors of Industrial and Systems Engineering Survajeet Sen and Julie Higle have been recognized by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) for publishing the most influential paper in Interfaces, the predecessor of INFORMS Journal on Applied Analytics. This was part of the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary celebrations of INFORMS.

INFORMS publishes 17 scholarly peer-reviewed journals, ranging from applied analytics to operations research and management science. The organization recently highlighted the 17 most influential papers in its 25-year history. Sen and Higle were selected for their 1999 paper “An Introductory Tutorial on Stochastic Linear Programming.”  Stochastic Linear Programming is a fundamental planning tool, and Sen and Higle’s paper discusses a variety of linear programming-based models that can be used for planning under uncertainty.

Sen is an expert in the field of modeling with optimization technologies, especially, modeling for infrastructures such as electricity, transportation and communication. He joined the University of Southern California in 2012. Previously, Sen was a professor of systems and industrial engineering at the University of Arizona and Ohio State University. Sen is a Fellow of INFORMS, and was previously a chair of the INFORMS telecommunications section and founded the INFORMS optimization section. His awards include being a plenary speaker at INFORMS Annual Conference, International Conference on Stochastic Programming and several others. He has also served on editorial boards of several journals (Operations Research, SIAM J. of Optimization).  He has been a distinguished speaker at several universities.

Higle’s research focuses on the development of models and solution methods for decision-making under uncertainty. She was previously a professor of Systems and Industrial Engineering at the University of Arizona, and then a Professor and Chair in the Integrated Systems Engineering at the Ohio State University. She serves as Senior Vice President of Academics at the Institute of Industrial Engineers, and has served as vice-chair of the INFORMS Section on Optimization and Program Chair for the 10th International Conferences on Stochastic Programming.

When selecting the paper, INFORMS journal editors noted that “INFORMS Journal on Applied Analytics seeks to educate on analytical methods, and stochastic programming is an essential, but little known skill.” Sen said that it was a skill taught in the M.S. in Analytics program as well as in Ph.D. courses in the Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering.
