Karmel S Shehadeh
Gabilan Assistant Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering
Biography
I am a WiSE Gabilan Assistant Professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering (ISE) at the University of Southern California (USC). Before joining USC, I was an Assistant Professor of ISE at Lehigh University and a Presidential and Dean Postdoctoral fellow at Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy of Carnegie Mellon University. I hold a Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan, an M.S. in Systems Science and Industrial Engineering from Binghamton University, and a B.S.E. in Biomedical Engineering from Jordan University of Science and Technology.Research Summary
My research program aims to push the boundaries of the theory and applications of stochastic and (distributionally) robust optimization (SRO). My research group has a track record of designing, analyzing, and implementing innovative and computationally efficient SRO and mixed-integer programming (MIP) models and algorithms to solve challenging real-world optimization problems across diverse application domains, including healthcare, facility location, humanitarian logistics, and transportation. Another stream of my research focuses on designing fairness-promoting optimization frameworks. My research has been published in top-tier journals, including Operations Research, Transportation Science, European Journal of Operational Research, Healthcare Management Science, Naval Research Logistics, INFORMS Journal on Optimization, and Transportation Research Part C: Emerging Technologies. Professional recognition of my research includes an INFORMS Minority Issues Forum (MIF) Early Career Award, an MIF Paper Award, a Junior Faculty Interest Group (JFIG) Paper Prize, JFIG Teaching Excellence Award, and Service Science Best Cluster Paper Prize.I serve as an Associate Editor for Transportation Science, INFORMS Journal on Computing, and Healthcare Management Science. In addition, I am a member of the Early Career Editorial Advisory Board of Transportation Research Part C. In addition, I have held or currently hold several leadership positions, including serving as Vice President of Communications for the Section on Public and Societal Operations Research (PSOR), Vice President (President-elect) of the Section on Location Analysis (SOLA), and President of the Junior Faculty Interest Group (JFIG).
